Wendy and Carter’s Story

Wendy Maurer is an dedicated individual to advocate for disability resources.  She started her career as a Preschool Programs for Childhood Disabilities (PPCD) teacher in Eagle Pass, TX where she was regionally recognized for her work in early intervention and opened her district’s 1st Autism Unit classroom that utilized ABA programs in verbal behavior.  She moved back to the greater Houston area to obtain ABA therapy services for her son and started working at Cole Health and is now servicing the community and statewide leadership as Cole Health’s Regional Business Development Manager.

 

She has created a training program with providers to help educate future pediatricians in the field of ABA therapy, provides resources in the community, parent training, IEP advocacy work, statewide advocacy in our Texas legislator, and most of all passion to help families get connected to right resources.  She holds her non-profit agency Eagle Pass HEROES that provides resources and training for free to the rural area in Texas.  Wendy shares her story openly with others and also shares her drive on letting your disability stop you passion.  She shares her clinical diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia to others to help create awareness and accessibility for others.

 

Carter Maurer is thriving 8 year old child that brings a smile to everyone.  He loves to tell jokes and beyond creative in his storytelling.  Carter was diagnosed with autism when 2 years old and receive early intervention with ABA therapy at Cole Academy.  He went from non-verbal to non-stop talking.  ABA therapy truly gave Carter the foundational skills and self-advocacy skills that changed his life trajectory.  He is now in the 3rd grade where he also is active in basketball, golf, hip-hop dance, Boy Scouts, and play dates with his neighborhood friends.  His parents are beyond proud of Carter and know that he will correct them with his wit at anytime.  Carter is also an avid gamer, and is able to tell anyone the fine details and history on video games.  Carter shares that he wants to become a teacher at Cole Academy when he grows up to help other child like himself.  We all know there is no limit on what the future holds for our Carter!
